Synopsis

This handbook provides language teachers with theoretical tools to help them respond, within an inclusive framework, to the learning needs of all students in multilingual classrooms. On the one hand, it reflects on the sociolinguistic phenomena that arise from the relationships between languages and the communities that speak them, and the impact of these phenomena on the establishment of language policies and the development of school language projects that promote the knowledge and use of Catalan while valuing the linguistic repertoire of each child. On the other hand, the competences of multilingual people and the particularities of their linguistic uses are analysed and proposals are made, from the didactics of language, on how to articulate these competences and skills, which children already possess, in order to favour the learning of additional languages. Specifically, first some student-centred teaching approaches are presented and then emphasis is placed on the importance of classroom communication and the use of plurilingual resources in the interaction between students and teachers to promote the construction of knowledge in all areas of the curriculum.
